First Task

In class, we have been discussing different issues from around the world and the ways that people deal with and react to them. You have read news articles in class and analysed them.

Your task this week is to choose an issue that is important or of interest to you, and become an expert on that issue. You could find an issue or problem by looking at news websites (have a look at some of the links I've posted), reading newspapers, watching or listening to the news, or talking with friends, teachers and family members about what they think is interesting and important.

Write responses to the following, and include links to any websites you have used:
  1. Briefly describe the issue or problem that you have chosen. (Give details about Who, What, When, Where and Why it is a problem.) You will use this for your final report, so make sure you give plenty of detail.
The comment Bahar has posted is a good example of what you need to do for this task.

YOUR COMMENTS MUST BE WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS! DO NOT CUT AND PASTE SOMETHING THAT SOMEBODY ELSE HAS WRITTEN!!!!

  1. SWINE FLU

At the moment we are dealing with a health issue in the world called swine flu.It started all in Mexico. Turkish news paper wrote that the disease spread out from a four year old child in Mexico.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs.It spreads from a human to another.Humans do not normally get this swine flu. But however they did.
That's why it became a big issue in the world. Swine flu was first seen in Mexico.Schools in Mexico was shut down, because of this issue. We didn't face this problem in Turkey yet. But we have seen this disease in certain places like U.S,Canada,Europe,Israel and New Zealand.

Governments are taking steps to stop the spreading of the disease. They are also trying to find a vaccine for it. Barrack Obama said 'Will do whatever is necessary to control the impact of this virus.'

Doctors say that you can help stop spreading this flu by good hygiene.Washing your hands well.Using a tissue while you are coughing and sneezing ,if you don't have one cover your mouth with your arm. You should report to your parents if you are feeling bad .Stay at home and make sure you see a doctor!! So these are some solutions that you can help stop the spreading of the disease.

  2. The two atom bombs that were released to Hiroshima (while world war 2) made a big effect on the people living there. The radiation that was released while the atom bombs explode made a big health problem to the people.
Some professors and colleagues were trying to make a machine that can measure how much radiation was given off in any situation. But it had some problems because it estimated the amount.

  5. New bid to save Amazon rainforest:

The Amazon rainforest is being given extra protection, because the Brazilian government is worried about how quickly it is being destroyed.
Politicians have decided they've got to do more to stop people illegally chopping down trees in the forest.
The Amazon rainforest is very important for the environment.
But it's thought an area bigger than France has been cut down since the 1970s, and recently trees are being cut down at an even more worrying rate.
The Amazon rainforest is known as "the lungs of the world".
This is because the trees breathe in gases like carbon dioxide - which are harmful to us - and breathe out oxygen, cleaning the air for us.
Some of the forest is being cleared to make room to farm animals or grow crops.

    What is the issue/problem?
The Amazon Rainforest is getting cut down.

    Why is it important?
Because there are many trees and they help taking in carbon dioxide and give out oxigen (photosynthesis) and there are so many trees that this may effect us years later.

How are people dealing with/responding to this issue?
Politicians are dissagreeing with this idea.

Is this appropriate? What are some other ways people could respond?
Though it is appropriate, I think that this is a very big problem and must have more support.
Other ideas to deal with the problem:
-Governers should be conviced and so they should make laws with harsh punishments across cutting down the amazons trees.
-Donation boxes to treat the amazon should be made and sent to many places.
-Important brand names should be convinced of how big of a problem this is and try to ask for commercials and extra items should be selled especially for donating to the rainforest.

  6. 2010 accommodations
South Africa will host the FIFA world cup in 2010. South Africa is expected to provide accommodations to FIFA officials, football players, VIPs, soccer fans, and tourists. 65, 000 rooms are required for this purpose.
Although there are enough rooms in South Africa and in neighbouring countries, some hotel owners have increased their prices too high. This is becoming a problem because some people might not be able to afford these prices.
In order to deal with this problem the organisers expect all accommodation providers to register with a company called Match Hospitality.

  7. Scientists in Denmark wondered if global warming could make Greenland's wolf spiders bigger. During a ten-year study, they tracked spider sizes. In years when spring came 30 days earlier than usual, some spiders grew exoskeletons that were thicker than average, resulting in bigger bodies! In colder winters, spiders grew thinner exoskeletons. What's more, during warmer springs female spiders grew larger than the male spiders did.

As the Earth's temperature warms, bigger spiders could become the norm. Researchers aren't sure why warmer temperatures mean bigger wolf spiders. It could be because their prime hunting season is longer. Or perhaps longer summers allow the spiders to molt--shed their old exoskeletons--more often, letting grow bigger during their lifetimes. The study's co-author, Toke Høye, is pretty sure that bigger spiders will also mean MORE spiders, because larger female wolf spiders have more offspring than smaller ones. This is very bad. Global Warming is increasing and mutating animals. Today spiders tomorrow birds, mamals or even us. This unusual thing can cause animals to ruin nature with unusual aggresions or attacking other animals and this will damage the food chain so:
    GLOBAL WARMİNG MUST BE STOPPED!

  16. Global Financial Crisis 2008-2009

This crisis started at July 2007 when a loss of confidence by investors in the value of securitized mortgages (Securitization is a structured finance process that involves pooling and repackaging of cash-flow) begun. This resulted in a liquidity crisis (a sudden tightening of the conditions required to obtain a loan from the banks). Now the crisis has deepend and major stock markets around the world have been affected. Even economic capitals such as Luxembourg is affected by this Financial Crisis. People are also losing their jobs. Unemployment is off the charts. Not only are stockmarkets, countarys and people are affected Major toy brands such as the Lego Group are being torn apart from this dreaded global scale crisis. Goverments are working hard and giving very generous economic relief efforts. A permanent solution must be found soon.

Astronauts Michael Massimino and Michael Good, were sent to space to fix the damaged or not working parts of Hubble Space Telescope. The broken parts were the black hole scanner which also examined planets from other solar systems.

It took Massimino 2 hours to remove a stuck bolt and caused the space walkers to fall behind their schedule and not complete all of their tasks.Massimino used all his tools to bend the bolt out of the way.He also had to use his muscles which was the last thing he could do to remove the bolt.

NASA was not prepared for this ' Bolt Problem' while removing a foot-and-a-half long rail.

Massimino also had trouble with other stuff such as going back to the shuttle to swap dead batteries with new ones and refill his oxygen supply.

  18. Girls Getting Educated In Rural Areas of Turkey

One of Turkey's most important problems is proper education, especially in villages. Many children in villages - mostly girls - cannot go to school at all or only get the compulsory education (8 years).

In the past few years, some private organizations and the media have been collecting money for these children. Association For Supporting Contemporary Life (Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği) in particular has helped thirty-six-thousand girls since the time they opened in 1989 (twenty years ago).

The aim of this association is to give scholarship to at least one-hundred-thousand girls in Turkey's rural areas. The staff of this organization is volunteers and they collect donations from public.

The organization’s founder and chairperson, Prof. Dr. Türkan Saylan has sadly passed away this morning and will have her funeral tomorrow in Istanbul. We extend our sincere condolences for her.

food hunger has always been a problems for humans because there isn't enough food for the whole entire human population on the planet. did you know that every 3.6 seconds a person dies of food hunger. this happens in countries in south asia, africa and islands in the pacific and indian ocean. it happens in these countries because they are so poor that they can't buy enough food and that they don't even have a job. most the humans that die of food hunger are children. they die because there body needs food to grow. if children do not get food they can not grow anything in there body causing not only food hunger but many other health problems. many people help people by giving donations but this does not work all the time.

  26. These days there are some news but I found this news more interesting than others.
The best telescope in the world is broken so it needs to be repaired. The Hubble Space Telescope is located at the orbit around the world so the atmosphere doesn’t interfere with the light going to it. The parts that are broken in the telescope are the gyroscopes which control the balance of the telescope.
The astronauts are trying to fix this telescope to use it again for a long time. They are really sensitive because if they can’t put the gyroscopes balanced it will block the way of new scientific discoveries of distant galaxies.
Astronauts John Grunsfeld and Andrew Feustel spent 6 hours at the space off their shuttle called Atlantis. They have made three of five spacewalks to upgrade this gorgeous telescope, by which the telescope will have a better vision of a longer distance. And this will make it work for another five or ten years more.

People commit suicide for motives such as “hardship”, “debt”, “Bullying”, “unemployment”, or “failure to find work”.

The ranges of the age groups who commit suicide is very wide and even the children who aged 6 to adults who aged 85 and above tend to lose their lives on purpose.
The World Health Organization estimates that about 877,000 people world wide die by suicide each year.

  29. Animals Going Extinct

Most of the animals that are at risk of extinction or already are extinct are because of human activities such as hunting, habitat clearing, air and water pollution and quite a lot more. Also sometimes it isn’t human activities like, climate change, population increase and this to do with the eco system. If this keeps going at such a rate, than more than half of the world's species will be extinct in 100 years or so. We also know that 90 percent of all of the species that have ever lived on Earth are now extinct. We know this from studying all kinds’ fossils. A lot of very special and important animals are going extinct like pandas and lions. There are only 1,000 giant pandas left in the world and there are now only 23,000 lions left in Africa. It is sad because in the 1980s there were over 200,000 lions in only Africa. Experts now predict lions will soon become extinct at this rate.
Laurence Frank is a wildlife biologist from the University of California; he is one of the many people working on ways to solve this problem. He once said the only way to save lions and other animals from extinction, is to learn how humans and the animals can live together. This is very true and he is right, if everyone around the world would stop with the human activities that are killing animals then there would be more animals and maybe new species. I personally think that animals have just the same rights as humans do.

  31. Methane (CH4) gas is one of many contributors to global warming. It contributes by absorbing the earth’s radiation, which causes the heating up of the earth’s atmosphere. Methane gas is released from activities we do like coal mining and from animals such as cows. Methane can stay in the atmosphere for 12 years. Compared with CO2, Methane traps 20 times more heat but does not remain in the atmosphere as long. CO2 can stay in the atmosphere more than 100 years. Although Methane is a major contributor to the warming problem, if solutions are applied quickly then we can slowdown global warming in the short-term.

The Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) is trying to recycle the methane gas produced by landfills. They are trying to prevent more gas from going into the atmosphere by encouraging businesses, communities and energy providers to use landfill gases (LFG). By using LFG, less non-renewable energy sources such as oil, natural gas and coal will be consumed. Also this program decreases the air pollution in landfill areas where the program is put in place. This project also helps to create jobs, allow companies to make more and perhaps help communities save money. LMOP tries to help environmentally and economically in order to make a better future.

  35. BIRD FLU

A lethal strain of bird flu has been spreading across the globe for more than four years, killing millions of birds and hundreds of humans.

However, fears of a new pandemic, which could claim millions of lives, have not been realised so far.
Experts point out that cross-infection to humans is still relatively rare and usually occurs where people have been in close contact with infected birds.

But international bodies, such as the World Health Organization and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, have been using their knowledge and experience of outbreaks to prepare for a possible pandemic.

The big fear remains the risk of the H5N1 bird-flu strain combining with a human strain to produce a mutation that is more dangerous and difficult to combat.

  40. Video Games May Even Be Good For You
We keep on hearing from parents and teachers that video games aren't good for us. However, some studies show video games can actually be good for you. In one study, they showed people who play first person shooters such as Halo have better visual skills and are better at spotting details. As for violent video games, they actually make people take out violent thoughts. Instead of killing someone in real life you can take your anger out in your video games. Video games also help you socialize with your friends by discussing a new video game or sharing cheat codes and experiences. In this article I will argue that video games are accused for unfair reasons.
    What is the issue/problem?
Video games are being blamed for promoting violence and bad behaviour in children, for inefficient use of time, becoming a health hazard because children aren't moving, they are not interacting with each other. In addition, video games are affecting people's budgets negatively.

    Why is it important?
Parents don't allow their children to play video games. The video game industry is a big industry and this may cause the video game industry to crash thus leaving many people without jobs.

How are people dealing with/responding to this issue?
Video game companies are coming up with more effective and interactive gameplay such as the Nintendo Wii's motion senser or the Nintendo DS touch screen. Some scientists are doing experiments on gaming to see the real effects of video games on people.

What are some other ways people could react?
More video game consoles should get interactive gameplay, too. Another idea is more games should get multiplayer Co-operation modes to show kids the value of teamwork and will help also them socialize. They can make more games with online capabilities so kids can make new friends with people all over the world!
