Your Mission

Sixth Graders - read this veeeeery carefully...
This week, you are beginning your non-fiction adventures. This is the last piece of writing we will do for the year!!

The Task: Research a person or organisation that is working to deal with an issue or problem in their community. Present your findings as a research essay. You will work on this research essay in class and at home over the next few weeks, and submit the final copy to me in the English exam during exam week. (As soon as I know the date, I will tell you!) I will post an example of a research essay for you to look at when you begin the writing process.

Guidelines:
  • You must post to this blog at least once a week. Each week, there will be a question to answer, or a task to complete. Your answer must be submitted as an online comment.
  • Your comments must include links to any websites you have used for research.
Weekly Outline:
  • Week One (week beginning 11th May)
Select your issue or problem, and begin researching it.
  • Week Two (week beginning 18th May)
Select and find information about a person or organisation who is working to solve or improve this issue/problem.
  • Week Three (week beginning 25th May)
Develop your thesis and essay plan. Begin writing your essay in class.
  • Week Four (week beginning 1st June)
Continue writing your essay and conferencing with your teacher and classmates.
  • Week Five (week beginning 8th June)
You will complete and submit your research essay during the English exam this week. You will NOT be able to conference with Miss Kemp during the exam.

  11. ANIMAL SMUGGLING

Animal smuggling is when people trade and sell live animals and/or animal parts. Animals smuggled can be rare animal like a white tiger or common caviar. Many types of people and even some zoos’ will sell animals to the black market for profit. Smuggling is all over the world.

Animal smuggling happens in many different ways. Some of the different ways are by in the mail, over the internet, by planes, by hiding them in cars or semis’.

Animal smuggling, especially exotic animal parts, are worth a lot of money. All the parts taken from a killed tiger are worth up to 25,000 USD! People even try to smuggle rare bird eggs through airports by making a necklace out of the bird eggs!

Countries are trying to stop animal smuggling in different ways. Some of the ways are having agents go undercover to catch smugglers. They have border guards and airport guards, but they do not have enough undercover agents or guards.

I would try to solve Animal smuggling by hiring more agents and guards to try to stop animal smuggling. More agents would be able to work undercover so they could try to catch more smugglers. More guards would be able to check more bags, cars and trucks at country borders. I would give the smugglers a longer jail sentence and a high fine. The jail term could be 10 years and the fine could be 300 thousand USD. If any buyers of smuggled animal parts or live animals would be fined or arrested but not as high or long as the smugglers sentence.

  12. Swine Flu Outbreak

In April 2009, scientists found a virus which is called the swine flu in the media. The source of the outbreak in humans is still unknown. It was first started in USA, but then the virus went to even Mexico. Some organizations found that this flu would become a worldwide flu pandemic (the virus would be in the whole world).
Virologists have noted that the swine flu is less fatal and dangerous than the other health problems and the other pandemics, but the virus could mutate and become a more dangerous flu outbreak in the future.

  13. Hi Ms. Kemp,

I just want to make sure that it is ok to use wikipedia as a resource since it was used as a source for the Swine Flu Outbreak article.

I thought you said in class that it was not allowed.

  14. In Macquarie island an island halfway between Australia and Antartica things started going wrong soon it was discvered in 1810 .
Islands fur seals, elephant, seals and penguins were killed for fur and blubber ,then the rats annd mice that jumpe of the sealing ship was a problem .Cats were being used to deal with it .
Cats and sailors were feasted on rabbits .Feine numbes quickly grew .Then the island lost two types of birds the rail and parakeet . Meanwhile rabbits breded fast and because of it the islands plants were being eaten away .
At 1970s ,130,000 rabbits caused a lot of damage that disease myxomathosis started. The disease took the rabit population down .After it the vegetation begen recovering . But hen there were few rbbits cats started eating more birds so thy decided to shoot them and the last one was killed at 200.The disease failed to keep numbers f rabbits down . Rabbit population increased alot.So the plants were being eaten more .
Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Servie has plans to kill all the rabbits in the island along with some rats and mice. But this could make another unexpected effect .
Bergstrom says:'This is e largest island on which this type of eradicaton programme will have been attemped.'

  15. THE ARTIC MELTING
The artic is melting due to pollution because pollution is destroying the atmosphere and more sun rays are coming through the atmosphere and melting the artic. This is causing polar bears and some seals to diee out.Scientists determine that the ice is melting so fast that it will all be gone by the end of the century! Also the melted ice would mix into the ocean and will raise the water level about 7 meters. The artic started melting 30 years ago.

  16. Hi Berkin,
Thank you for checking with me :).
I would prefer if you did not use wikipedia as a resource. There are a lot of better places to get your information from.
You could try looking at news articles on www.bbc.co.uk, or other news websites. They will give you up-to-date information on swine flu, and how people are dealing with it around the world.
    See you at school!

  17. STOPPING THE ARTIC FROM MELTING
The Arctic Council (the governments of Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, the Russian Federation, Sweden, and the U.S.)is working on away to stop the artic from melting, but the only real way we can solve this is by stopping pollution. The Artic Council is trying to stop it by adopting ''effective measures" to combat climate change.

  20. TASK I

My issue is the extinction of polar bears.
Unless the pace of global warming slows or stops, polar bears could disappear within a century. Global warming effects the extinction of the polar bears by the tempareture, making glaciers melt.

  22. Task 2

SWINE FLU HITS TURKEY AND INDIA
BBC news website does not say who is dealing with this problem so i am not sure. But i would solve this problem by putting them in the emergency part of the hospital until the cure of this awful virus (swine flu) and that is what whoever solved this problem did!
    or
I would send them back where they came from
    or
I would kill them which i know is a bad idea but probably i would do that

  25. Dear Mysterioso,
Your blog post needs to be published on the day of your first English lesson for the week.
So, for example, if you were in my Tuesday/Thursday/Friday class, you would need to have posted by Tuesday. Or if you're in my Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday class, you'd need to post TODAY!!

  27. ms.Kemp ı understood what we need to do in task 3 but ı didn't get how we find a related article like how can ı find one???

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Deniz - good question!
Sometimes articles have links in them to 'related articles', so you could use those. (Often, you can find links at the bottom of a wikipedia article to articles/sites written by experts.) Or the news sites I've given you have 'search' facilities, and you can type in keywords to find articles.
I always start with google :).

  32. Hi again, Eda - what a great idea! Yes, you should definitely send it to them. Let me know if you need help to find their email address.
